The United States of America (also referred to as the United States, the U.S., or the USA) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district. At the time The West Wing takes place, the USA is widley considered the most powerful nation in the world.

Geography Edit

The country is situated mostly in central North America, where its forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, DC, the capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, with Canada to the east and Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The country also possesses several territories in the Caribbean and Pacific regions. The US also has numerous Military Bases in countries around the world.

Bartlet presidency (1999 – 2007) Edit

In 1998, Dr. Josiah Bartlet, a Nobel Prize-winning economist and democratic politician, was elected president of the United States, and was inaugurated on January 20, 1999.

At the end of his presidency, President Bartlet initiated the Bartlet doctrine, which stated that the U.S. should come to the aid of any nation in the world that truly needs that aid.

Santos presidency (2007 – ) Edit

In the 2006 presidential election, Democrat Matthew Vincente Santos was elected to replace Bartlet, and took office on January 20, 2007.[1]
