August Adair was a Democratic senator whom Speaker of the House Jeff Haffley put forward as a potential vice president after John Hoynes's resignation. Like the other candidates, he was chosen because he was unlikely to be a threat to the Republican nominee in the 2006 Presidential Election.
Adair was immensely boring. During his meeting with President Bartlet, he droned on about the deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Bartlet excused himself to ask Debbie Fiderer why she hadn't interrupted them after five minutes like he'd told her, and she told him it had only been three.
