Bob Mayer was communications director to the Vinick/Sullivan campaign, first appearing in King Corn and last appearing in the The Last Hurrah, where he counseled former boss Arnold Vinick about his future presidential prospects. He was Vinick's speechwriter and handled the press.

In some respects he appears more conservative than Vinick and campaign manager Sheila Brooks, speculating how many Latino votes in Nevada were legal and suggesting that Vinick change his stance on abortion to pro-life based on a poll suggesting he could win with 53% of the vote if he did so.[1][2] He is also more rough around the edges personally and confides in campaign strategist Bruno Gianelli that he wouldn't want a job in a Vinick White House, preferring the "gladiatorial arena" of election campaigns to "making the trains run on time" in government.[1] However, he is a loyal staffer to Vinick and Sheila and works well with liberal Democrat Bruno, even proposing going into business with Bruno after the election ("yin and yang political consultants - our motto could be 'it's not about the ideals, it's about the money, stupid.'")[1]
