Cal "Steve" Mathis was Chief of Staff to Vice President, John Hoynes.

Biography

Pre-Bartlet

Prior to joining the administration and the Vice President's staff, he was an advisor to Governor Bartlet in the opening days of the presidential campaign. He was fired in favor of Toby Ziegler by Leo McGarry.

Bartlet's Term

Mathis then joined John Hoynes and became his Chief of Staff to Vice President. After Hoynes resigned, Mathis was replaced by new Vice President Bob Russell with former Deputy Communications Director Will Bailey.
