The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the chief military adviser to the President of the United States. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is appointed by the President and is the highest-ranking military officer in the Armed Forces.
Admiral Percy "Fitz" Fitzwallace served as President Bartlet's Chairman of the Joint Chiefs until his retirement, when he was replaced by General Nicholas Alexander.
