D. Wire Newman (often referred to colloquially as D.W.) (1930-) was a former President of the United States, he served from 1987 to 1991 and was the last Democrat to have occupied the White House before President Josiah Bartlet.

Newman was born and rasied in Huntsville, Alabama. Newman was elected to the Alabama State House of Representatives in 1964, he became Speaker of the body in 1975. In 1978 Newman was elected Governor of Alabama, and was re-elected in 1982. In 1986, Newman ran for President in the Democratic primary a dark-horse candidate. Eventhough Newman had little name ID or money, he organized a grassroots effort that helped him the Iowa Cacus, and the New Hampshire primary. He had a lock on the nomination by mid-May and chose Massachustts Governor Michael Dukakis as his running mate. that November the Newman/Dukakis ticket narrowly beat the Bush/Quayle ticket.

New lost his bid for re-election to former California Governor Owen Lassiter.

Newman spoke with regret about being compelled to ally the U.S. with certain Middle East dictatorships and unstable governments while servin as president, but decried Republicans as going much farther.

As is the prerogative of former chief executives, Newman – somewhat to Bartlet's chagrin – opted to receive daily national intelligence briefings, similar to the President's Daily Briefing.

He would be picked up and join President Bartlet on Air Force One to attend the funeral of his successor, President Owen Lassiter.
