The 1998 Democratic National Convention was a presidential nominating convention, held in the summer of 1998, wherein Democratic party delegates chose their nominee for President and vice president of the United States for the 1998 presidential election. Governor Josiah Bartlet of New Hampshire was nominated for president. He chose his former primary rival, Texas Senator John Hoynes, to be his running mate.
Convention[]
The crowd at the convention's first night
On the first night of the convention, Bartlet invited Hoynes to his hotel room. Bartlet asked Hoynes to be his running mate, and then told him of his case of Multiple Sclerosis. Hoynes, still bitter at losing the primaries, angrily replied "it was supposed to me be accepting the nomination". He did not give his answer right away.[2] Eventually, Hoynes accepted Bartlet's offer, and the two were nominated.
Members of the press were critical of the skyboxes at the convention and access to spinners.[3] California labor leader Victor Campos addressed the convention.[4]
Bartlet's acceptance speech[]
"Tonight, what began at the commons in Concord, Massachusetts- as an alliance of farmers and workers, of cobblers and tinsmiths, of statesmen and students, of mothers and wives, of men and boys- lives two centuries later as America. My name is Josiah Bartlet, and I accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States!"[5]
