Franklin Pierce

Franklin Pierce was President of the United States from 1853 until 1857. He was a member of the famous political Pierce family, and the Pierce Bedroom in the White House was named for him.

As President, he gained some notoriety when he broached the idea of annexing Cuba. He was ultimately unsuccessful, despite the beliefs of his great-great-great grandson, Ryan Pierce.

Trivia

His first name "Franklin" was never mentioned on the series and is taken from real life. Like Josiah Bartlet, Pierce came from New Hampshire and was a US Representative from that state.

Although Ryan Pierce and his uncle Roland Pierce are descendants of Franklin Pierce within the universe of The West Wing, in reality Franklin Pierce's three children died in childhood, and he has no descendants.
