Franklin Pierce was President of the United States from 1853 until 1857.

He was a member of the famous political Pierce family.[1]

As President, he gained some notoriety when he broached the idea of annexing Cuba. He was ultimately unsuccessful, despite the beliefs of his great-great-great grandson, Ryan Pierce.[2]

The Pierce Bedroom in the White House was named for him.[3]

Notes

His first name "Franklin" was never mentioned on the series and is taken from real life. Like Josiah Bartlet, Pierce came from New Hampshire and was a US Representative from that state.

  1. "All right. Pierce is...? Is he a Pierce Pierce?" from The Dogs of War
  2. "My great-great-great-granddad whipped up a lather when he annexed Cuba." from Constituency of One
  3. "You're a Pierce? Pierce Bedroom in the Residence. That's you?" from The Dogs of War
