Lord John Marbury, Marquess of Needham and Dolby, Earl of Croy, Baronet of Brycey, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States from the Court of St. James's was the British Ambassador to the United States and former High Commissioner (Commonwealth Ambassador) to New Delhi from the United Kingdom. His grandfather was a Viceroy and one of Marbury's uncles performed in the London Opera Company's production of the Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta "The Mikado" as the character "Nanki-Poo". (The Wake Up Call)

Lord Marbury was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge where he studied ancient history and Eastern Philosophy. He played cricket for the college with former England and Glamorgan captain Tony Lewis. Prior to that he was schooled at Eton. He was a member of the Garrick Club, where he often played bridge on Thursday afternoons.

His Lordship is an unrepentant smoker and drinker, particularly in the face of disapproval, but when not marinated shows a very keen grasp both of the historical causes of conflicts and the political realities of their handling in the modern world. He is an effusive and universal lover of women, frequently crossing the line in the view of other men at least in his public praise and attentions. Lord Marbury especially enjoyed needling Leo McGarry whom he pretended to forget and then addressed as Gerald. This veneer of loathing was reciprocated, Leo referring to him on his first visit as "Lord Fauntleroy", among other things.

Title Errors:

In "Dead Irish Writers," he states that he is "John, Lord Marbury, Earl of Croy, Marquess of Needham and Dolby, Baronet of Brycey." However, he is often referred to as Lord John Marbury or Lord Marbury. These three designations are incompatible:

Lord John Marbury would be the younger son of a duke or marquess. Lord Marbury would be the duke/marquess/earl/viscount/baron of Marbury. The Earl of Croy would be known as Lord Croy.
