Mallory O'Brien was the only child of Jenny and Leo McGarry.

Biography[]

Mallory was very nearly born at Exit 322 on the Long Island Expressway.[1] She attended private schools, but came to teach fourth grade at a public school. She was passionate about supporting public schools and opposed school vouchers.[2]

She brought her fourth-graders to the White House for a tour that Sam Seaborn bungled, and to defend himself, he told her he was having a bad day because he had slept with a call girl.[3]

Following her parents' separation, Mallory brought Leo his things from home and promised to help him find a new place. She invited herself and Zoey Bartlet to a bar with the White House Senior Staff, and Zoey revealed Mallory had told her about Laurie.[4] Leo gave Mallory tickets to the Beijing Opera he had intended to use with Jenny, and she invited Sam to go with her. Leo believed Mallory blamed him for her parents' divorce, so he deliberately kept Sam at work to teach Mallory a lesson about the difficult schedules of White House employees; however, Mallory said she didn't blame Leo.[5]

She wanted to support Leo during his press conference admitting to drug and alcohol addiction, but he deliberately told her the wrong time. She read President Bartlet's unreleased statement of support and found it moving, and she kissed Sam when she found out he wrote it.[6] Leo gave Mallory a position paper Sam had written supporting school vouchers and didn't tell her it was opposition prep to drive a wedge between them, solely because it amused him.[2]

Mallory and Sam never spoke after the picture of him and Laurie was published in the paper, though they saw each other in the hospital after the Rosslyn shooting. She started dating a professional hockey player named Richard Andreychuk[7] and moved to New York City when he was traded there. She moved back to Washington, D.C. after they broke up.[8]

She told her father that her mother was getting remarried, unaware he already knew.[9]

She waited in the hospital for news about her father after his heart attack.[10]

At some point she married and had a son, and when Leo was the Democratic nominee for vice president, the campaign staff wondered whether her family would join him on the campaign trail.[11] She came to be with her father on election night and went to the hospital after he had a heart attack.[12] She went to her mother's house after her father's funeral.[13] She was going through Leo's things when she found the framed original "Bartlet for America" napkin, which she gave the outgoing President Bartlet as a gift.[14]
