Owen Brady (1952 – 2004) was a conservative American jurist and an Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court.

He was known for his fierce discussions with liberal Chief Justice Roy Ashland and was described even by Democratic Deputy White House Chief of Staff Josh Lyman as a visionary who inspired a new conservative revival by changing the whole argument. Some said that Brady was the conservative equivalent for Ashland.

However, he died from a sudden heart attack at the age of 52.[1] Brady's unexpected death led to a scramble to find a replacement that focused on three justices of widely varying ideologies: moderate Brad Shelton, liberal Evelyn Baker Lang, and conservative Christopher Mulready. President Josiah Bartlet named Mulready as his successor some time after his death as part of an agreement with the Republicans to trade conservative-for-conservative, liberal-for-liberal.[2]

Behind the scenes[]
