Ulysses S. Grant was the eighteenth President of the United States from 1869 to 1877 as a Republican.
Grant only voted once in his life, and it was for the Democratic Party of the time. He was an alcoholic, but he was such an effective general during the American Civil War that when Abraham Lincoln was told, he said, "Send all my generals a case of whatever he's drinking."[1] As president, Grant established Yellowstone as the nation's first national park on March 1, 1872.[2]
Mallory O'Brien corrected Sam Seaborn after he said Franklin D. Roosevelt was the eighteenth president.[3] Grant was brought up during the discussion whether to replace John Hoynes as vice president in the 2002 Election since Leo McGarry's own struggles with addiction were publicly knowledge; when John Hoynes told Senior Staff he hadn't had a drink since he was twenty-two, C.J. Cregg said that Grant would have slapped him, and Hoynes joked that he had.[1]
