Potential candidates:
- Governor and 2006 vice presidential nominee Ray Sullivan (R-WV) - considered the Republican frontrunner, with support from both moderate 'Vinick Republicans' and pro-life conservatives following the 2006 campaign
- Senate Majority Leader Robert Royce (R-PA) - a prominent and well-funded establishment moderate backed by former Vinick chief of staff Sheila Brooks, but he and Brooks both feel he "doesn't have a chance"
- Former Senator Arnold Vinick (R-CA) - wanted to run, but considered unlikely due to his age and decision to accept a post as his former rival Matt Santos' Secretary of State
